Valborg Bonfire: Lilla Sickla Äng, Stockholm

Tonight we welcomed spring in true Swedish tradition – with the Valborg bonfire! Valborg, or Walpurgis Night as it’s known in English, is celebrated every year on April 30th. Originally named after Saint Walpurga, the day has evolved into a celebration of spring’s arrival in Sweden. When I was a teenager, this was an evening for serious partying, which usually meant drinking a whole lotta of booze.

Across the country, communities gather to light large bonfires, sing traditional songs, and say goodbye to the long, dark winter. Captured this image just a little while ago at Lilla Sickla Äng in Stockholm – a beautiful spot to experience this ancient Swedish tradition.
