Santa Monica Images

From Santa Monica Beach, somewhere north of the Santa Monica Pier and not far from where I used to surf in the mornings. In the fall of 2013, I often spent whole afternoons walking around the beach, photographing people on the bike path, and in the waves. It felt purposeful, somehow. But above all, these long, daily walks were a meditative, zen-like routine that I enjoyed. I rarely returned to our apartment on 2nd Street without at least a couple of good shots to include in my collection at Santa Monica Images. Like the lady above – one of many colorful people riding up and down the coast.

Humbled by Coda-19

Today I learned that the coronavirus is so small, that it would take several hundred of them lined up after each other just to cover the side of a single grain of sand. That’s small!

Yet once a virus gets into your body and takes hold of a host cell, almost any host cell, the very purpose, the nature, the destiny of every virus, is ultimately to take over the cell it enters and reproduce itself as fast as possible.

Furthermore, I also learned that a virus is basically a recipe, a self-executing, malignant program with code designed without any other agenda than to hijack and grow exponentially. I don’t know much about computer viruses (I’ve been using Apple computers for 30 years, so I have never experienced what it’s like to be infected by a computer virus.) but they seem to have been modeled after biological virus.

There is something humbling about the enormous reproductions caused by covad-19. For all of humans incredible inventions, all our disruptive, technical breakthroughs and feats of astonishing mechanical engineering, including advanced intercontinental ballistic missile systems, satellites, lunar travel and an international space station, all it takes to disrupt world order is a single teeny, weeny virus. And only by eventually retro-engineering it will we be able to figure out how to counteract its ability to devastatingly paralyze every society on the planet. Humbling.

Åter i sömnrubbningens märkliga töcken

Fast jag satt trångt som fan, sov jag hela åtta timmar på hemvägen från L.A. Fastande ändå under flera dagar i en ond cirkel där förkrossande trötthet, överenergi och ett Zombie-liknande tillstånd avlöste varandra oregelbundet. Återhämtat mig nu men ligger en aning efter vad gäller genomgång av film- och fotomaterialet från Venice och Santa Monica Beach. Charlotte och Elle drar västerut i mitten av nästa vecka, så då lär det bli tid för ett par kvällspass. Bilden är från Venice Beach Pier och en av vad jag tror är flera pärlor som väntar på sortering och redigering.

Out with the old – in with the new

What a year 2014 turned out to be! Felt like we’ve endured a disproportionate share of drama on many levels. But we’ve also enjoyed plenty of good fortune – particularly with a bunch of inspiring assignments – both at home in Malmö as well as abroad. From a professional traveler’s perspective, I am thankful that all flights have gone well and that I’ve had only minor issues with lost or broken luggage. Airport logistics and tedious security procedures continue to make traveling tiresome – but not a deterrent from experiencing and documenting new places and faces.

Certainly looking forward to seeing how 2015 will play out. We’ll be spending the first few days of the new year in the South Indian sea on a rooftop here in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
