My Portugal Book

Of all of 2024’s books, this is undoubtedly one of my favorites. It encapsulates so much of what I love about Portugal – a country that has conquered my heart and imagination time and again. Together with Charlotte, and a couple of times with Elle, Portugal has become our favorite destination in southern Europe. There’s something uniquely timeless and comforting about this country, and every visit feels like peeling back another fascinating layer.

Portugal’s natural beauty is simply unparalleled – at least on the Iberian Peninsula. From the dramatic cliffs of the Algarve to the rolling hills of the Douro Valley, the landscapes invite exploration and offer an ever-changing backdrop of serenity and adventure. The rugged coastlines, so beloved by surfers like myself and by others from all around the world, are not only ideal for catching waves but also for long jogs or walks along beaches that remind me of southern California.

Portugal’s ancient cities, like Lisbon and Porto, possess a charm that feels both eternal and effortlessly modern. Lisbon, with its steep hills, iconic yellow trams, and the glistening Tagus River, exudes an energy that’s laid-back and cosmopolitan all at once. Porto, on the other hand, feels more introspective and cozy, with its labyrinthine streets, riverside cafes, and the soulful notes of fado music drifting through the air. Both cities are adorned with the breathtaking beauty of azulejos – the exquisite hand-painted tiles that turn even the most unassuming corners into works of art.

Then there’s the food, which has undoubtedly played a role in our continued return. Portugal is a seafood lover’s paradise. Whether it’s grilled sardines in a tiny seaside village, a bowl of creamy seafood rice, or the briny perfection of freshly shucked oysters, the country’s cuisine is both comforting and refined. And let’s not forget the pastéis de nata—the iconic custard tarts—best enjoyed with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a cup of strong Portuguese coffee.

What truly sets Portugal apart, though, is the people. The Portuguese have a way of making you feel welcome, whether you’re chatting with a fisherman in a small coastal town, enjoying the kindness of a server in a bustling Lisbon café, or simply exchanging smiles with strangers as you wander through cobblestone streets. Their friendliness, combined with a deeply ingrained sense of humility and quiet pride, creates an atmosphere that feels inviting and warm.

It’s no wonder Portugal holds such a special place in our hearts. Order your copy of my book “Portugal” here.
