Ale Stenar på Österlen

ABOVE THE VIKING SHIP AT ALE STONES AT ÖSTERLEN

From today’s visit to Ale’s stones just east of Ystad in the Österlen hills above the fishing and surf village of Kåseberga. Some believe Ale’s stones are a burial monument for a lauded Viking king, while others think it’s an astronomical clock from a bygone era.

The formation of the 59 stones is 67 meters long and 19 meters wide at its widest point and follows the outlines of a Viking ship from 500-1,000 AD, the early Iron Age. Maybe it’s just a big mouth smiling towards the sky?
